took me long enough to finally watch this movie.

I wouldn’t actually call this a good movie but it was definitely used as a template for future romantic comedy movies and TV shows. Granted this was made in the 1980’s so not everything is going to click with the kids of this generation but high school will always be high school in some way, shape, or form.

Molly Ringwald puts in a powerful performance as Samantha, a young teen girl struggling to fit in. A lot of the side characters have parts that we would call nowadays stereotypical and maybe even offensive but for its time I don’t think the context was meant in that way.

In the end, this movie is pretty cheesy and at times even cringy but seeing how it essentially catapulted the teenage romantic comedy genre to the next level is pretty cool. It also baffles my mind that this movie was rated PG…the standards for that era must have been extremely high or something.

Verdict: 6.5/10
